Everyone wants to make gold in order to pay for their MMO activities, but does it really take hours and hours of farming materials only to undercut the next lowest seller to make a sustainable income? For some people they may value their time a lot less than gold and therefore, are willing to sell their materials at a very cheap price if it means getting the gold within the next 10 minutes.
But the problem a gatherer faces is the fact that just about everyone is a gatherer. What makes matters worst is the fact that gathering node being static it's fairly easy for players to hunt down the popular farm spots. What should take a player no more than an hour to farm a stack of materials may now take more than two hours because of competition. If it takes a player nearly two hours to farm a stack of materials such as ore, I don't think the gathering profession is a very profitable one. Even though the costs to get started (gold wise) are limited.
